Won 11-0

Blustery autumn conditions and tough defences greeted both teams on the Common. Greenwich controlled the territory for a majority of the 1st half but solid defending from the visitors kept them at bay.

Fly half Ricky Cook showed with his first touch the good form he’s been finding this season with a quick break before being bundled into touch. This was the last significant break from the young fly half as the resulting tackle forced Cook off with a knee injury but not before the fly half knocked over a penalty for an infringement at the break down.

Gavin Grant moved to fly half with full back Darren Clancy moving to outside centre and Dave Jones coming on as sub. Greenwich continued to dominate possession throughout the half but only had a solitary try from prop Jordan Maloney to show for it.

The injury curse continued to haunt the home side as they lost two more players either side of half time. First, try scorer Jordan Mahoney was replaced by Hasan Hasan and then wing Okei Ewerum suffered a heavy collision to “Little Okei” and was substituted by flanker Richard Mahoney.

As the second half kicked off, Old Olavians began to assert themselves for a majority of the half. Good scrambling defence from the home side kept them at bay- this was highlighted by two great tackles in opposite corners at the Greenwich try line. First by scrum half Craig Hohaia and a second by flanker Richard Mahoney.

Despite spending the majority of the half being camped in their own half- Greenwich managed to make a break at the end by openside Jack Pearce who carried for 30m after pouncing on a loose ball. This sudden counter attack ended with a penalty conceded by Old Olavians under their own posts which Gavin Grant scored.

Windy conditions, great defence from both sides and some interesting refereeing resulted in a low scoring game, but expect to see both sides towards the top end of the league table come the end of the season.

T- Mahoney
C-
P- Cook x1, Grant x1

MoM:
3- Clancy

Handbag- Either Ben Worley being more interested off-the-ball stuff or Okei’s injury to “Little Okei”….
